5 ‘Green’ States

Thursday, February 2nd, 2012

“Don’t blow it, good planets are hard to find.”  Boy isn’t that the truth.  Coming into the 21st century, the whole country seemed to wake up and realize that we need to take care of our planet.  It won’t be here forever.  What does being ‘green’ mean?  It describes a state that has low carbon dioxide emission, low smog/pollution, and strong energy efficiency policies.  So what states lead the pack in being green?  Check out the list.

Vermont

Vermont has the second smallest population in the United States. They also leave the smallest carbon footprint in the country.  They have a very high number of polices to reduce pollution and promote alternative energy.

Oregon

Aside from pristine beaches, green forests and beautiful mountain ranges, Oregon is known for their bike friendly roads.  In Portland alone, there are over 200 miles of bike lanes.  And in Eugene, there’s over 30 miles of bike paths, and biking is the number one mode of transportation.  Oregon is very low when it comes to contributing a carbon footprint.

Washington

They don’t call it the Emerald City for nothing!  Seattle has more than 20 LEED certified buildings.  And Ballard (suburb of Seattle) has been dubbed ‘Green Ballard’.  They have many farmers markets and offer classes educating people on how to be greener.  Also, the state is leading in building homes with solar panels.

Maine

Maine ranks 6th in the least amount of toxic waste and 4th in alternative energy.  Just about half of their energy comes from renewable sources.  A large amount of their energy comes from the woods and the wood’s waste.

Hawaii

Tropical air and lush beaches, Hawaii brings a beautiful image to mind.  And they know it.  They rely heavily on tourism and are very aware of the environment.  They produce the least amount of toxic waste in the country.  And as far as implementing energy saving procedures, they rank 6th.  They are beautiful and green!

All of these states have many things to offer including coffee, pineapple, wine, skiing and beautiful scenery.  The fact that they are working to protect our earth is such a wonderful bonus.  Are you looking for a ‘green’ way to advertise your business?  Consider sending out Recycled Newspaper Pencils.  You can customize them with your business info too.

Street Furniture Around the World

Tuesday, January 24th, 2012

Street furniture should be sturdy and practical, yet there is certainly nothing wrong with injecting a little personality too.

Streets, walkways and open areas throughout the world are decorated with style that often isn’t based on budget buying, but based on style and culture, as well as modernistic plays on traditional styles.

By using clever ways of reflecting the surrounding environment, lots of councils and land management companies across the UK are opting for a variety of street furniture that takes on a similar feel to the theme of lighting or other features around them.

Powerful strong lines, romantic and modern curves and natural material help build an area filled with unified furniture that blends perfectly with the environment.

So be it parks, public seating areas, gardens and more there are so many different types of street furniture that not only create convenience to the public, but that enhance and tidy up a city making it look much more attractive.

We decided to take a look at furniture placed around major cities across the world to see how it compares to that in the UK.

Australia

In Australia we found some very smooth lines were being used to really compliment the culture surrounding the Marina. The Marine benches showcased around Brisbane were built with a harbour type environment in mind, and the colourful benches manage to mimic the lines of yachts and boats that adorn stylish port.

Using galvanised steel, coating it in bright yellow colours and then creating shapes that are unusual yet very sophisticated, the benches stand out perfectly – perhaps because of their high level design and quirky shapes.

They enhance a sophisticated marina but still do remain in keeping with the surroundings. The benches sat around the marina manage to completely reflect the lifestyle and culture that goes hand in hand with coastal culture, whilst creating a real contemporary design statement.

Manchester

Custom made benches made way for a street scene in Manchester. With clever use of lighting and materials that are long lasting, the benches are immovable with no loose fittings which make way for sleek modern design that cannot be easily damaged, both by the public and by extreme weather.

The benches on this revamped street in Manchester are maintenance free – they require a little cleaning perhaps, so we believe the benches will look outstanding for years.

The lighting simply enhances the good design and helps increase the visual appeal of the surrounding environment by complimenting the nearby lighting from the glass fronted stores.

Using granite, the finish is fairly natural and simple, and blends in with the concrete in the nearby buildings, and the grey of the pavement surface.

New York

Technically not benches, but they can be used as so, the New York ‘cityracks’ have been designed in a way that we think reflects the city as a whole. The quirky designs have been built using sophisticated technology that compliments the city perfectly.

The furniture adds plenty of interest around the areas in which they are placed, and some of the yellow colouring reflects the obvious yellow cabs that New York is famed for, with the more subtle metal finish adds quite an industrial touch.

The designs are not particularly natural looking, but the styles take on innovation that reflects an almost industrial and arty type feel, whilst the wider pavements of the city can accommodate the larger designs easily.

Japan

Modern architecture and sleek styling are the two things we might expect from designers in Japan, and while we are not entirely sure how the mirrored surfaces of the benches / tables will stand up to heavy use, they certainly stand out and reflect, ahem, the surroundings perfectly!

The reflections in the mirrored finish mean that the more natural surroundings such as trees and floor surfaces are shown in the furniture, so it takes on the look of the environment around it.

The angles used and the thin material are a visual trick – the steel used to construct the benches can withstand the heaviest object, and the finish is very fluid which makes the furniture appear extremely modern and well designed.

Don’t Recycle? This is Why You Should

Friday, January 13th, 2012

Modern society places a lot of emphasis on recycling. But why is this so and is recycling really as important as everyone makes out? Here are some reasons why recycling is very important and why everybody should be doing their bit to help.

1.    Recycling conserves resources

When we recycle, old products get made into new products. This may sound like a very simple statement but if we do not recycle then every new product that is made has to be made using new and fresh resources from the land. This may involve forestry and cutting down more trees or mining. Thus, recycling materials helps to protect our earth and conserves our natural resources.

2.    Recycling saves energy

It takes far less energy for an old material to be made into a new product than for a new product to be made and for all of the new materials and resources to be extracted from the earth in order for such a new product to be made. Therefore recycling helps to save energy, reduces costs and reduces carbon emissions. This leads us onto our third reason:

3.    Recycling protects our earth and environment

Forestry, mining and extracting other resources from our earth all takes a lot of energy and is done through the use of machines. Such procedures lead to a lot of air pollution and water pollution.

4.    Recycling reduces our landfill sites and reduces greenhouse gases

Landfill sites are growing larger and more numerous and it is up to us to recycle in order to stop the rapid growth of such sites. Not only are landfill sites not good for our earth but they also produce very high levels of greenhouse gases which are harmful to our o-zone layer.

Overall there are many great reasons to recycle. But how can a person recycle within the confines of their own home? There are many incentives and schemes run by the government and local council in order to encourage families and households to recycle, such as garden waste bins and plastic recycling bags and bins that are provided for each household.

However there is a simple way in which many homes can help protect our earth – by repairing broken or damaged items within the home instead of replacing such items. For instance, bathtubs and worktops are two of the most common areas within the home to suffer from damage or discolouration. Worktops within the kitchens are especially prone to dents or cracks and scratches from heavy or sharp items commonly used within the kitchen.

If instead of throwing out an old bathtub you resurface your bath and instead of replacing worktops altogether you resurface your worktop then this can dramatically help the earth and will also help to save a lot of money. It is a lot cheaper to resurface your bath or resurface your worktop within the kitchen than it is to replace an entire bath or worktop, especially if the kitchen worktop is made from an expensive material.

This article was written by Crispin Jones on behalf of Hometech, an environmentally aware firm who are able to resurface your bath or resurface your worktop so you don’t need to harm the environment by replacing them.

3 Energy Efficiency Heaters: Save Money & Energy This Winter

Friday, January 13th, 2012

Keeping the house heated during the winter can be a very hard task. Having a fire would be nice, but not everyone has a fireplace. Electricity bills can skyrocket by using the central heating, and who wants to heat rooms that aren’t being used? Here are a few eco-friendly heaters that can help keep you cozy while keeping costs down.

Lasko 755320

The Lasko 755320 Ceramic Tower Heater with Digital Display and Remote Control is a good stand alone heater that is both budget and eco friendly. The digital display makes programming the heater easy. The unit also oscillates to keep the warm air moving. The tower also runs very quietly; imagine curling up next to the heater for a nap and not worrying about a constant buzzing. There is also a built in overheating protector, so you don’t have to worry about burning down the house while saving money. You can switch between two power outputs according to your needs.

The Warm Wave HeaterWarmwave 1500

The Warmwave 1500 Watt Ceramic Tower Portable Convector Heater is also a good choice for a personal electric heater. With multiple output settings, you can easily control how much heat the unit puts out. This unit also oscillates to provide even heat coverage with good ventilation for the unit. The base is non-slip, and has automatic shut off if it’s tipped over, so you don’t have to worry about any possible fire hazard. This heater is ideal for smaller rooms, providing brilliant heat for up to 150 square feet.

ECO-Heater

If you’re looking for an in-the-wall heater, the ECO-Heater is a hard personalized heater to beat. It’s easy to install, and can be painted the same color as the wall, blending in very well. The heater only runs at 165 degrees fahrenheit, which means that even though it warms the room, it isn’t hot enough to burn you. The burning element isn’t even exposed, which also cuts down on the fire hazard. Running at only 400 watts, it costs about four cents an hour to operate this heater. Talk about eco friendly!

So there we go lots of Eco Friendly ways to stay warm and cosy this winter. Gone are the days of money burning and high energy consuming bar fires keeping us warm go out and get a great low energy usage fire and save the coins.

Three Important Things to Look for in Energy Efficient Roofing

Monday, January 9th, 2012

If you have a home or business, it makes sense that you would want to stay within your budget and save as much as possible when it comes to construction and infrastructure updates. One thing that can have a huge impact on your bills and your carbon footprint is energy efficient roofing.

Here are some things to look for when you are seeking the best possible roof for your building needs.

1. Durability and Endurance

There are a lot of roofs out there that claim to be good for the planet, but believe it or not, durability and longevity are two huge factors when it comes to finding a truly great roof.

Durability is important because of economic and environmental reasons. Let’s face it: roofs are expensive, and you want yours to last. The best kinds of roofing materials (like PVC, for instance) can last for 15 to 20 years when correctly installed. Less durable materials (like composite shingles) may only last a decade or less before they start needing to be replaced.

Infrequent replacement also means less waste. In terms of environmental friendliness, having little to no waste is a good goal to have.

2. Reasonable Pricing

PVC is an economical material to purchase and use for roofs. The material is easy to manufacture and comes in prefabricated sheets for strength and ease of installation. Due to the fact that it’s both quick and simple for a trained professional to install, PVC is a cost effective material in terms of labor, too.

In terms of value, warranty is key. Some PVC manufacturers offer competitive warranties at no additional cost.

3. High Degree of Earth Friendliness and Efficiency

In addition to being reasonably priced and durable, PVC roofing is a very good choice when it comes to the environment. There are many reasons for this. One is that installing a PVC roof doesn’t require anything that’s harmful to the environment. It doesn’t pollute with chemicals (no toxic substances are required to adhere the roof to your building), and it doesn’t pollute with sound (no heavy machinery is necessary to install it).

When it comes time to remove or repair a PVC roof, all the components used are recyclable. Add this to the fact that PVC roofs have a high solar reflectance index (deflecting hot UV rays), and it’s a good insulator to keep wanted heat inside the building.

Environmentally Friendly Cars

Wednesday, December 28th, 2011

If you are looking to reduce your carbon footprint, or simply want to save money on gas, there is a new generation of cars being produced. Hybrid cars, or those who use electricity as well as gas, and other so-called “green” cars allow for better gas mileage and the first step toward the elimination of gasoline as a fuel source altogether.

Types Of Eco-Friendly Cars

There are many different varieties of car that don’t rely totally on gasoline as a powering source. When someone mentions a green car, they might be referring to:

Hybrid Cars:

A hybrid car uses electricity first, but will switch to gasoline after a certain amount of time. This reduces the need for gas and can improve the gas mileage of a car.

Electric Cars:

Electric cars rely totally on the powering of a battery to get the car where it needs to go. No gas is used and the driver recharges it just like someone would recharge a cell phone that had a dead battery.

Fuel-Efficient Cars:

A lot of designers are trying to get the most out of the traditional gasoline engine. Many smaller cars are getting 40 or more miles per gallon. There are even cars being designed that seek to make these cars more aerodynamic and get rid of factors that can reduce gas mileage and can get anywhere from 90-100 MPG.

Examples Of Eco-Friendly Cars

If you are thinking about shopping for an environmentally friendly car, you should know some examples of what to look for. One of the more popular hybrid cars out there is the Toyota Prius which is a compact car, and the Chevy Volt which can get up to 35 miles with just an electric motor, or can go up to 375 miles with just a single tank of gas if you want to use both.

How Hybrids Vary From Conventional Cars

A conventional car is going to rely on gas to get you everywhere, while a hybrid will use an electric motor to assist the gasoline engine. Depending on what kind of a hybrid you get, the electric motor could run the car on its own, or it could simply help the engine idle at a red light, or help with braking and other processes that can take away from optimal gas mileage. This is something to talk about with a dealer before purchasing a hybrid.

How is Dry Ice Created?

How is Dry Ice Made? Dry Ice Sublimation

We’ve all seen dry ice – in science class, in the shipment of Omaha steaks, and countless other places in our everyday lives. But what exactly is dry ice made out of? Why is it called Dry Ice? Is it harmful to the environment?  We will provide you with answers to all of these questions and more as you read further.

What is Dry Ice Made Of?

Dry ice is the solid form of carbon dioxide or CO2.  It is rarely seen in its solid state, because the temperatures required to keep the atoms in a solid form must be so low, that it rarely exists in nature.  CO2 is produced by humans and animals every day as we exhale.  The temperature needed to keep carbon dioxide in its solid state is -70 degrees Fahrenheit or lower.  Dry ice is created by gathering carbon dioxide (usually as a byproduct of some other manufactured item) and compressing that gas until it reaches its non-natural liquid state.  The pressure is then quickly removed which causes a rapid drop in temperature, enough to freeze the carbon dioxide into large blocks or small pellets.  The large blocks are the most popular because they last longer due to their relatively small surface area.

Why is it Called Dry Ice?

There is no naturally occurring liquid form of carbon dioxide, which means that it goes straight from solid to gas when melting.  In fact, this melting process has its own unique name since it skips the liquid state and goes straight to gas.  When dry ice “melts” it is called sublimation.  Because of its relatively mess-free sublimation process, dry ice is popular in keeping perishable items cold when on cross country trips.  The relatively clean nature of CO2 has also contributed to its popularity as a method of pressure washing.  This method is called Dry Ice Blasting and leaves behind no residue when cleaning the surfaces of machines or other hardware.

Is Dry Ice Eco-Friendly?

Dry ice is absolutely eco-friendly.  Because its creation is usually based off of chemicals that are a result of other products being made, carbon dioxide does not really require any additional chemical reactions to be created.  CO2 is a naturally forming gas in our atmosphere, and although its overabundance has been the scapegoat for global warming, its use in the creation of dry ice does not contribute negatively to this phenomenon. Dry ice used commercially is actually better for the environment than many of its alternatives because it does not generate any additional waste.  If you are environmentally conscious, do some research and determine if there are any dry ice alternatives to components of other services you already use such as blasting, shipping, etc.

Dry ice has many uses, and is a phenomenon of nature. Not too many of us think about how it is created or what impact it might have on the environment, but hopefully after reading this article, you walk away better informed on the lookout for new ways to incorporate its benefits into your daily life.

Money-Saving and Eco-Friendly Household Supplies

Monday, October 24th, 2011

Modern society, for all of its consumption, has also become a more eco-friendly, earth conscious place. As a result, more and more people are looking into ways that they can “go green” in different areas of their life.

One area of your life that has the potential to be a little greener is your household supply closet. Here are some simple tips for getting more eco-friendly household supplies.

Purchase Store Bought “Green” Items

Thanks to the consumer demand for products with more “green” qualities, many brands are providing at least some earth friendly alternatives. Most of these alternatives are labeled in a blatant way, highlighting the methods that are used to achieve an eco-friendly status.

You can hunt down these products by visiting a local store and checking the different bottles for labels of this kind. If you’re willing to spend some time educating yourself, you can also check the ingredients of the standard products for more harmful ingredients, so you can avoid purchasing those cleaners.

If you don’t want to go on a hunt to find items like this, you can always visit a specialty store. One of the best types of specialty store is the online niche website. There are several niche websites that specialize in selling green products of this nature.

Make Your Own Cleaners

There are many high quality cleaners that you can make at home, using ingredients that you may already have. Some items can work as effective cleaners right out of the box. Baking soda can be used for scrubbing surfaces or as an air freshener. Vinegar can be used as a floor and tile cleaner.

Lemon juice can help get rid of grime. Washing soda can work as a powerful dish soap. Many of these items can also be combined, allowing you to make your own earth powered, low consumption, low cost cleaner.

Minimize Your Use

There are many ways that you can reduce the products you use to clean. One simple way is to reduce the number of cleaners you purchase and keep around the house.

Many all purpose cleaners, whether they are store bought or home made, can multi-task, eliminating the need for a cabinet full of unused cleaning supplies. Water conservation is also important during cleaning. Avoid letting the water run unnecessarily, and try to use less water in your mopping buckets or for scrubbing jobs.

You should also avoid one-use items at all costs. Paper towels, disposable napkins, paper plates, and plastic utensils are unnecessary forms of consumption, even if they’re recycled. Instead, use items like durable mops, sponges, and handheld vacuums to get the job done. If you ever do use the consumable alternatives, be certain that you recycle them.

There are many other ways that you can reduce your negative impact on the environment. Reducing general use and recycling, in addition to following tips like these, are just a couple of the methods you can use. Be sure to look into other ways that you can effectively go green.

Transport Companies Saving The Planet One Load At A Time

Wednesday, September 28th, 2011

Unless you live under a rock, everyone is aware of the controversy about global warming and what most believes is the culprit, carbon dioxide emissions. While this conversation may continue for the existence of man one thing is sure, the emissions of carbon dioxide are a form of pollution and man has the technology to reduce this form of pollution and that cannot be a bad thing.

So how can the ecologically aware company do their part to reduce their environmental footprint? One of the solutions is to use courier service to move what needs to be moved. What people need to understand is that the more cars, the more trucks, the more vehicles on the road, the more carbon dioxide that is being released into the environment.

One of the simple solutions to the problems of too much carbon dioxide is to simply reduce the number of vehicles on the road, therefore reducing the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The question always becomes that if you are running a business how to balance the responsibility of reducing carbon dioxide emissions and running your business in a profitable way.

At first the idea of bulk shipping through the use of a courier service or a car transport seems like an easy solution, however when selecting couriers a company needs to do just a little research in order to ensure the courier they have selected operates in an environmentally responsible way.

Understanding that most transport companies are actually very irresponsible, research needs to be conducted. When you hire company to move your product does the company use bio diesel, do they reduce the amount of empty runs, do they work to balance their emissions by balancing the way they company itself is run and the amount of necessary emissions?

All of these questions need to be addressed and there are companies out there working on the removal of these issues from the way they operate. First the transport companies can work hard to schedule their runs in order to reduce or eliminate empty runs, this obviously reduces their emissions, and because empty runs makes up most of the driving these companies do.

Next the company can switch over to bio diesel which has much lower emissions and the process of making bio diesel is also more environmentally friendly. The one thing that a transport company can do is to encourage or require its employees to operate the company itself in a responsible way in order to balance the amount of unavoidable emissions of carbon dioxide.

Putting all of these elements together it is possible to run a transport company in an environmentally responsible way, while remaining profitable. As a company the needs things moved from place to place it becomes their responsibility to hire these types of transport companies in order to reduce not only their own footprint but the overall emission into the atmosphere which will benefit mankind. There is only one planet that humans can live on and destroying it, does not make good business sense.

Solar Power Programs At Risk Of Due To Budget Constriction

Wednesday, September 28th, 2011

As the solar power programs has been gradually taking a firmer shape, several energy industries cautioned that funds are strictly constricted. As a result, it may limit their effort to invest in different solar power schemes that can be the answer for having an alternative source of energy.

In the UK, almost every project for next year has been closed and brought up to conclusion. The budget will then be distributed to existing solar energy business. Also, it has been stated that once solar energy sources were installed, owners will be urged to pay as long as the sources are up and running. However, experts said that the event can be altered if the government will have changes in its rules in the future.

Most of the allocated fund will then be transferred to those owners that setup their solar equipments this year, which is good news. However, there will be fewer budgets that will be allocated into small business that will also establish solar equipments for the next year. It is projected that the constriction in funding will go on until 2015.

Experts said that if the yearly funding constriction will be sturdy and will not see signs of any luck, there will be a big trouble for the solar energy sector. Solar energy companies are having qualms that their anticipated solar energy growth will fall down. The problem in solar energy funding has become the main concern of those renewable energy companies.

If things will go the way experts projected, funding will be restricted quickly than what they have projected. It might put a stop on the solar energy business, which has become a top contender when it comes in alternative energy source. The energy department stated that the problems in funding will be addressed effectively and they will find ways on how to evenly spread out budget allocation in different solar energy sectors. Nevertheless, the government seems to have worries in reallocating funding.

Renewable energy has grown popular these days, as they can let owners have guaranteed income. It can likewise let them have free electricity. With those things, solar energy companies want to get fair share of the funding. Even though they want to get the best support, not all can have the chance to get what they need. As long as the government and the energy department are still in the talks for funding, other solar power companies should wait for what will be the outcome of the said negotiations.

Richard Wright is sad to see budget restrictions on such an important issue. He writes in support of his client a Sussex solar panels company who specialize in Solar PV
